How to itemise Grock and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Grock

Grock relies heavily on terrain interactions through his passive Earthen Force and ultimate Wild Charge to initiate team fights and soak damage. Because Earthen Force increases physical defense near walls and rewards charging Power of Nature without interruption, Grock needs mobility, crowd control resilience, and layered defenses to safely gap-close and create terrain traps with Guardian's Barrier. This build solves Grock's vulnerability to magic burst and sustained basic attack harass when diving deep into enemy lines. By pairing early mobility and defense with anti-heal and damage mitigation items, Grock can confidently wall-pin targets with Wild Charge and charge Power of Nature in the frontlines.

Item by item

Tough Boots - Encourage

Early

Tough Boots - Encourage provides essential early movement speed that triggers Earthen Force more efficiently when hugging walls. The crowd control reduction helps Grock execute his Power of Nature without getting locked down before reaching a wall for control immunity. Furthermore, the Encourage skill buff enhances nearby allies during early objective fights around the Turtle, allowing Grock to lead aggressions and set up Guardian's Barrier blockades effectively.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Passive - Encourage: Success

Dominance Ice provides crucial physical defense, which synergizes with Earthen Force to make Grock exceptionally tanky near walls. Its attack speed reduction passive weakens marksmen while Grock holds his position near Guardian's Barrier. By reducing nearby enemy healing and attack speed, Grock can channel Power of Nature right in the middle of team fights without getting shredded by enemy physical carries during early and mid-game objective contests.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Arctic Cold: Reduces the Attack Speed of nearby enemy heroes to 70% of normal.

Antique Cuirass significantly reduces incoming physical skill damage when enemies hit Grock. Because Grock regularly charges forward using Wild Charge into full enemy compositions, he takes frequent skill attacks. The Deter passive decreases the attacker's physical damage with every skill hit, allowing Grock to sustain heavy frontline punishment while holding his Power of Nature charge near terrain, ensuring he survives long enough to disrupt enemy formations.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Deter: When hit by a skill, reduces the attacker's Physical Damage by 4% for 2s (this effect stacks up to 3 times).

Athena's Shield solves Grock's main defensive gap against burst magic damage. While Earthen Force grants massive physical defense near walls, it leaves Grock exposed to burst mages. The Shield passive provides instant magic damage reduction upon taking magic hits, allowing Grock to survive high-damage spell combinations when initiating with Wild Charge or blocking choke points with Guardian's Barrier. This enables safe, aggressive dives against magic-heavy lineups.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Shield: Upon taking Magic Damage, gains 25% Magic Damage Reduction for 3s (applied before taking damage). Regains this effect 5s after leaving combat.

Radiant Armor complements Athena's Shield by counteracting continuous magic damage types in late-game team fights. Taking magic damage builds Holy Blessing stacks, increasing magic defense with each hit. When Grock holds Power of Nature in prolonged skirmishes or guards his team near walls, this item ensures continuous spell harassment from enemy mages fails to wear down his HP pool before he can execute a terrain-crashing Wild Charge.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Holy Blessing: Taking Magic Damage grants 6-20 Magic Defense (scales with level) for 5s, up to 6 stacks (1 stack only every 0.6s).

Immortality

Situational

Immortality serves as the ultimate safety net during high-stakes late-game engagements around the Lord. The Immortal passive revives Grock shortly after dying, granting a shield and extra HP. This second life guarantees that even if Grock sacrifices himself to launch an aggressive Wild Charge against a wall or lock down priority targets with Guardian's Barrier, he can rise back up to channel Power of Nature and secure the fight.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy magic damage compositions

Prioritize building Athena's Shield immediately after Tough Boots - Encourage before completing physical defense items. Because Earthen Force naturally scales Grock's physical defense near walls, early magic protection prevents enemy mages from melting his health pool during early Turtle contests and Wild Charge initiations.

Against continuous physical skill harassers

Delay magic defense items to rush Antique Cuirass right after Dominance Ice. The Deter passive repeatedly lowers the physical damage of skill-reliant physical heroes every time they strike Grock, allowing him to safely channel Power of Nature and deploy Guardian's Barrier under heavy pressure without losing his frontlining momentum.

When facing heavy health regen and attack speed carries

Rush Dominance Ice right after Tough Boots - Encourage to shut down enemy healing and rapid basic attacks early. This allows Grock to dive enemy marksmen with Wild Charge and pin them against walls, neutralizing their sustain and damage output before they can scale into the late game.
