How to itemise Zhask and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Zhask

Zhask relies on sustained damage through his Nightmaric Spawn and its Death Ray attacks, but suffers from low mobility and high mana consumption in early lane trades. This build addresses his vulnerability while maximizing the output of his summon. Because Nightmaric Spawn inherits a portion of Zhask's Magic Power and its Death Ray counts as a Basic Attack, scaling his attack speed and raw magic power directly amplifies his turret's offensive presence. Furthermore, enhancing ultimate uptime ensures Zhask can repeatedly enter his Fusion Enhanced state to survive dives and control teamfights around the Turtle or Lord. Defensive magic shielding late in the game compensates for his fragile base statistics.

Demon Boots

Early

Early in the laning phase, casting Nightmaric Spawn, Mind Eater, and Hive Clones rapidly drains Zhask's mana pool. Demon Boots solves this sustain issue by restoring mana whenever enemy minions perish nearby. This continuous mana recovery lets Zhask spam his abilities to clear waves and poke opponents without constantly returning to base, ensuring he maintains lane pressure and secures early map control around objective spawns.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mysticism: Getting a kill or assist on an enemy Minion will restore 4% Mana. (An assist occurs when a Minion dies within 2s after taking damage from the hero.)

Since Nightmaric Spawn relies on rapid attack sequences to trigger its slowing Death Ray, attack speed is crucial. Feather of Heaven synergizes perfectly with Nightmaric Spawn because its passive adds bonus Magic Damage to Basic Attacks. Because Death Ray is registered as a Basic Attack, this item dramatically increases the sustained single-target and push damage delivered by Zhask's turret both in normal and Fusion Enhanced forms.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Affliction: Basic Attacks deal extra Magic Damage equal to 50 plus 30% of the hero's Magic Power.

Zhask relies heavily on his Ultimate for survival and high-impact teamfighting through Fusion Enhanced summons. Fleeting Time reduces the current cooldown of his Ultimate whenever Zhask secures a hero kill or assist. This continuous cooldown reduction enables Zhask to deploy his empowered Nightmaric Spawn in back-to-back skirmishes, ensuring he is rarely caught vulnerable without his primary offensive and defensive tool available.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Timestream: Hero kills or assists reduce the Ultimate's current cooldown by 30%.

Holy Crystal provides a massive scaling boost to Magic Power. Nightmaric Spawn inherits a percentage of Zhask's Magic Power, while Mind Eater and Hive Clones scale directly off his total attack potency. Completing Holy Crystal drastically elevates the damage of the Death Ray, increases the burst from Mind Eater double-hits, and enhances the output of Hive Clones during objective contests and critical mid-to-late game encounters.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mystery: Gains 21%-35% extra Magic Power (scales with level).

As enemy heroes purchase Magic Defense to withstand Zhask's summon pressure, Divine Glaive ensures his damage remains lethal. Its passive scales Magic Penetration against opponents stacking defense. This allows Nightmaric Spawn and Mind Eater to pierce heavy magic resistance, preventing tanky frontline enemies from ignoring the continuous fire of Death Ray during late-game Lord fights and high-ground siege scenarios.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Spellbreaker: When attacking an enemy, gains 0.1% extra Magic Penetration for each point of the enemy's Magic Defense, capped at 20%.

Zhask has extremely low base durability, leaving him fragile if caught outside his ultimate fusion. Blood Wings grants an enormous boost in Magic Power while awarding a durable shield that scales with his total offensive power. This shield regenerates out of combat and grants extra movement speed, helping Zhask reposition before deploying Nightmaric Spawn or surviving initial burst damage from enemy assassins.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Guard: Gains a shield equal to 200% of Magic Power. The shield will regenerate 20s after being damaged, and grants 30 Movement Speed while it lasts.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When faced with frequent high-burst teamfights early in the game

Prioritize completing Fleeting Time immediately after Feather of Heaven before building Holy Crystal. Having the ultimate available quickly through enemy kills or assists allows Zhask to frequently enter his Fusion Enhanced state, granting him crucial survivability and double-beam stuns with Mind Eater during contested Turtle fights.

When the enemy team builds heavy Magic Defense early

Rush Divine Glaive ahead of Holy Crystal as your third core item. Converting Magic Penetration based on enemy defense ensures that Nightmaric Spawn and its Death Ray continue to melt tanks and fighters who attempt to soak your turret damage, keeping your push power and sustained objective damage high.

When dive assassins repeatedly target you in late game

Prioritize Blood Wings earlier right after Holy Crystal to obtain its defensive shield and movement speed bonus. The added barrier scales with your high Magic Power, preventing soft targets from being instantly eliminated before you can cast your ultimate to fuse with Nightmaric Spawn.
