How to itemise Valir and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Valir

Valir excels at oppressive mid lane control through continuous skill spam, but his kit relies heavily on landing sequential skill hits while managing high mana costs and low defensive stats. This build centers on magnifying the damage and crowd control of his passive Ashing and Burst Fireball. By combining mana sustain with passive burns and slowing effects, Valir turns Burst Fireball resets into an inescapable kite engine. The build addresses his immobility and fragile defense, allowing him to zone enemies safely using Searing Torrent and utilize Vengeance Flame for aggressive teamfight control without getting burst down instantly during skirmishes around key map objectives.

Item by item

Demon Boots

Early

Valir relies on casting Burst Fireball repeatedly to maintain skill charges and harass enemies in the Mid Lane. This frequent casting quickly drains his mana pool in early skirmishes. Demon Boots solves this sustain issue by restoring mana whenever Valir eliminates or assists in clearing minion waves. With reliable mana recovery, Valir can continuously zone opponents, maintain lane pressure, and freely assist allies at the Turtle.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mysticism: Getting a kill or assist on an enemy Minion will restore 4% Mana. (An assist occurs when a Minion dies within 2s after taking damage from the hero.)

Ice Queen Wand is essential for Valir to consistently land his skill shots. The item applies a stacking slow whenever Burst Fireball or Searing Torrent deals damage. This slow prevents enemies from dodging consecutive fireballs, guaranteeing charge resets. Furthermore, keeping targets trapped in the slow zone forces them to absorb full firewall damage from Vengeance Flame while steadily building three stacks of Ashing for guaranteed stuns.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Ice Bound: When a skill deals damage to an enemy hero, it will also slow them by 10% for 2s (stacks up to 3 times). This effect has a 1s cooldown.

Glowing Wand creates a devastating synergy with Valir's passive Ashing. When Burst Fireball hits or Searing Torrent creates a firewall, Glowing Wand applies a continuous max HP percentage burn alongside Ashing's built-in burn. This double-burning effect melts high HP tanks and fighters effortlessly, turning Valir's low cooldown poke skills into lethal threat zones during prolonged teamfights around objectives like the Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Scorch: Burn targets for 3s, dealing Magic Damage equal to 1.5% of the target's Max HP per second.

Genius Wand shreds target magic defense with every hit of magic damage Valir inflicts. Since Valir can repeatedly cast Burst Fireball upon landing hits, he quickly maxes out magic defense reduction stacks on multiple enemies. This defense reduction magnifies the damage from his passive Ashing detonation, enhanced skills under Vengeance Flame, and incoming magic damage from allied teammates during chaotic team clashes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Magic: Dealing Magic Damage to enemy heroes will reduce their Magic Defense by 3-7 (scales with level) for 2s. Stacks up to 3 times.

As a low-mobility mage, Valir needs late-game survivability against dive heroes. Blood Wings provides massive magic power alongside a regenerating shield scaling with his magic stats. The shield grants extra movement speed, which combines with the movement speed boost from Vengeance Flame. This extra mobility helps Valir maintain optimal distance, kite melee chasers, and safely cast Searing Torrent to peel threats away.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Guard: Gains a shield equal to 200% of Magic Power. The shield will regenerate 20s after being damaged, and grants 30 Movement Speed while it lasts.

Immortality

Situational

Immortality serves as vital insurance during late-game teamfights when enemy burst damage can overwhelm Valir before he can react. If killed, the revive passive brings Valir back into battle. Upon reviving, Valir can immediately trigger Vengeance Flame to cleanse lingering debuffs, use Searing Torrent to knock back camp-killing enemies, and restart his Burst Fireball slowing chain to turn lost fights around.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against high-mobility enemy comps and aggressive divers

Rush Ice Queen Wand immediately after completing Demon Boots. The continuous slowing effect is critical to prevent fast divers from reaching you. Slowed targets cannot easily dodge Burst Fireball, allowing you to maintain infinite fireball resets and push them away with Searing Torrent before they collapse onto your mid lane position.

Against heavy health-stacking tank lines

Prioritize Glowing Wand right after Demon Boots before building Genius Wand. Combining Glowing Wand's max HP burn passive with the HP percentage damage of Ashing enables Valir to shred high-health targets early. This maximizes your damage output during early fights around the Turtle when enemy tanks lack magic defense items.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Valir's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
