How to itemise Roger and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Roger

This build is designed to unleash Roger's full potential as a dynamic stance-switching Jungler. Roger relies on switching between his ranged human form to poke targets with Open Fire and his aggressive wolf form to execute low-health enemies using Full Moon Curse. To succeed, Roger needs early attack speed and movement speed to clear creeps rapidly, paired with mid-game sustain and true damage to survive frontline skirmishes. This item path solves his vulnerability to enemy crowd control when diving in wolf form while amplifying his scaling lost-HP finisher damage, transforming him into an unstoppable chasing threat capable of securing Turtles, Lords, and teamfight wipes.

Item by item

Ice Hunter's Swift Boots

Early

Accelerates Roger's jungle clearing speed while giving him initial movement speed to cycle skills. The hunter passive assists in securing creeps, Turtles, and Lords efficiently. Faster movement lets Roger switch between human form to apply slows with Open Fire and rapidly close distances in wolf form, setting up strong early game ganks and objective control across the map.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Hunter: After dealing damage to a Creep, deal 25<2|lv 3> + True Damage to the target over 3s (damage is increased by 100% for non-Marksmen heroes).

Windtalker

Early

Provides critical attack speed and movement speed that synergize directly with Hunter's Steps. In human form, extra attacks allow Roger to rapidly apply current HP damage from Full Moon Curse. The movement speed boosts aid positioning to setup Open Fire pokes, while the passive magic damage procs frequently during early skirmishes, dramatically accelerating his jungle farming and mid-game rotation speed.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Typhoon: Every 5-2s (reduced by 0.2s for each Basic Attack), the next Basic Attack will hit up to 3 enemy units for 150-362 Magic Damage. (This attack can Crit and the damage increases to 200% against Minions.)

War Axe

Core

Gives Roger physical attack, spell vamp, and true damage as he stays in combat. Stacking fighting spirit fits Roger's playstyle, as he weaves human pokes into aggressive wolf form dives. The continuous damage amplification directly enhances Lycan Pounce and Full Moon Curse's lost HP damage. The additional spell vamp keeps him healthy during extended brawls inside the enemy frontline.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage grants 12 extra Physical Attack and 2% extra Spell Vamp per second for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Deal 10% extra True Damage according to Base Damage at full stacks.####[C8This effect is reduced to 50% for Marksmen, Mages, and Supports.]

Perfectly complements Roger's constant shape-shifting and frequent skill usage like Open Fire and Hunter's Steps. Triggering skill casts enables Divine Justice, adding extra physical true damage to his subsequent basic attacks. This lets Roger melt durable targets and quickly execute low-health enemies when diving in wolf form, while providing additional sustain to endure chaotic teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Divine Justice: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 60% Physical Attack as extra True Damage (1.5s cooldown).

Grants essential durability, movement speed, and control duration reduction when Roger takes or deals damage. Since Roger dives into melee range in wolf form, this item prevents him from being easily locked down by enemy crowd control. Stacking its passive alongside Hunter's Steps makes him virtually uncatchable while offering the defensive stats necessary to survive focal fire in late-game skirmishes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Brute Force: Each second after dealing damage, gain 6 extra Physical Attack and Magic Power and 2% extra Movement Speed for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Gain 15% extra Control Duration Reduction at full stacks.

Maximizes Roger's execution power as a finisher. Its passive triggers extra physical attack against low-HP targets, perfectly aligning with Full Moon Curse's lost HP damage scaling in wolf form. Once finished, Roger can instantly eliminate wounded targets with Lycan Pounce, turning him into a lethal late-game cleanup threat who easily wipes out entire enemy squads.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy crowd control and prolonged fights

Prioritise building Brute Force Breastplate earlier right after your core damage items like War Axe. The added control duration reduction and movement speed prevent Roger from getting stunned and burst down when leaping into wolf form, allowing him to weave between human pokes and wolf executes safely.

When playing behind or needing immediate execution damage

Rush Blade of Despair ahead of Brute Force Breastplate to maximize raw physical attack. This dramatically boosts Full Moon Curse's lost HP damage in wolf form, allowing Roger to capitalize on enemy missteps, quickly burst squishy targets, and turn around losing teamfights around Turtle or Lord contests.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Roger's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
