How to itemise Nolan and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Nolan

Nolan relies heavily on triggering his passive, Dimensional Rift, by overlapping rifts created by Expansion, Gauge, and his ultimate, Fracture. Since rift detonations recover energy and deal massive burst damage, his kit demands extreme physical attack, cooldown reduction, and instant burst synergy. However, Nolan suffers from energy dependence and high squishiness when diving into skirmishes. This build resolves his early clearing speed and energy flow while capitalizing on his empowered Cosmic Leap basic attack. By pairing burst-enhancing physical items with cooldown reduction and survivability, Nolan can cleanly execute multi-rift detonations, disengage safely, and maintain persistent pressure across the jungle without burning out during prolonged teamfights.

Ice Hunter's Magic Boots

Early

Ice Hunter's Magic Boots accelerate Nolan's early jungle clear and objective taking on the Turtle. The extra True Damage over time allows Nolan to quickly clean up Creeps and secure early level advantages. Additionally, lower skill cooldowns enable Nolan to cast Expansion and Gauge more frequently, setting up faster Dimensional Rift detonations to maintain his energy levels through constant passive triggers during early ganks.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Hunter: After dealing damage to a Creep, deal 25<2|lv 3> + True Damage to the target over 3s (damage is increased by 100% for non-Marksmen heroes).

Blade of the Heptaseas perfectly synergizes with Nolan's enhanced Cosmic Leap basic attack from Dimensional Rift. Since both triggers require staying out of combat for a short duration, Nolan's initial leap out of the bush unleashes devastating slow and flat physical damage. This immediate burst locks enemies in place, ensuring his subsequent Expansion and Gauge slashes align effortlessly to detonate rifts directly under target heroes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Ambush: If no damage is taken or dealt within 5s (excluding from Minions or Creeps), the next Basic Attack will deal an additional 160 Physical Damage and slow the target by 40% for 1.5s.

Hunter Strike is essential for Nolan's fast-paced hit-and-run playstyle. Striking an enemy hero or creep multiple times triggers its passive movement speed boost, which Nolan easily accomplishes by landing Expansion, Gauge, and Fracture in rapid succession. The burst of movement speed lets Nolan quickly reposition to detonate secondary Dimensional Rift activations or disengage safely after casting his ultimate, while extra physical attack sharpens his rift damage.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Retribution: Dealing damage to the same enemy hero or creep 5 times in a row grants 50% extra Movement Speed that decays over 3s (8s cooldown).

Endless Battle amplifies Nolan's combo sequence by weaving True Damage into his basic attacks following skill casts. Because Nolan frequently spams low-cooldown skills like Expansion and Gauge, he constantly triggers Divine Justice. This extra damage helps burst down tankier targets that survive basic rift detonations. Furthermore, the item provides mana and health sustain, letting Nolan stay on the map longer without frequent recalls.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Divine Justice: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 60% Physical Attack as extra True Damage (1.5s cooldown).

Blade of Despair acts as Nolan's ultimate power spike, drastically elevating his physical attack scaling across all abilities. When targets drop below half health, the bonus physical attack boosts the damage of Fracture slashes and incoming Dimensional Rift explosions before they detonate. This ensures that Nolan can instantly execute squishy targets with a single Cosmic Leap engage followed by a swift Expansion swipe.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Queen's Wings

Situational

Queen's Wings addresses Nolan's innate squishiness when diving deep with Gauge or positioning multi-rift ultimate hits from Fracture. When his health drops significantly, the passive damage reduction prevents him from getting burst down instantly, while spell vamp restores health from his area-of-effect Dimensional Rift explosions. This critical survivability window allows Nolan to survive retaliation, regain energy through rift activations, and escape or finish off lingering targets.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Demonize: When HP drops below 40%, gains 20% Damage Reduction and 35% extra Spell Vamp for 5s (60s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When facing tanky team compositions with high health pools

Prioritize Endless Battle earlier right after Blade of the Heptaseas before Hunter Strike. The True Damage from Divine Justice bypasses physical defense, allowing Nolan to chip away at sturdy frontline heroes whenever he weaves basic attacks between Expansion and Gauge casts during skirmishes.

When enemy burst threats focus you down quickly during dives

Prioritize Queen's Wings ahead of Blade of Despair. The sudden damage reduction and spell vamp grant Nolan crucial survival time when diving into dangerous teamfights with Fracture, allowing his Dimensional Rift activations to heal him back up while sustaining through enemy high-damage retaliation.
