How to itemise Lapu-Lapu and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Lapu-Lapu

Lapu-Lapu relies on jumping into the heart of teamfights with Bravest Fighter and sustaining through heavy frontline damage using Great Sword stance and Homeland Defender shield triggers. Because his ultimate grants bonus defenses and enhanced skill spam, he excels at prolonged skirmishes, but requires physical attack and spell vamp to keep his health high while taking damage. This build focuses on maximizing his skill-based sustain and physical offense, allowing him to dive aggressively without falling quickly. By layering spell vamp and damage mitigation on top of his innate shields and defense boosts, Lapu-Lapu transforms from a mere lane bully into an unkillable frontline initiator during major objective contests like the Turtle and Lord.

Item by item

Early movement speed allows Lapu-Lapu to position for Justice Blades poking and gap-closing with Jungle Warrior. The extra physical defense from Valor stacks while taking physical damage in the EXP lane trades, helping him survive enemy attacks before he unlocks Bravest Fighter. It gives him the foundational durability needed to win early laning trades and safely accumulate Bravery Blessing stacks to trigger his Homeland Defender passive shield without getting chunked down.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Valor: Gain 4 extra Physical Defense for 3s when taking Physical Damage, up to 20.

Bloodlust Axe

Early

Bloodlust Axe gives Lapu-Lapu immediate spell vamp sustain whenever his abilities hit targets. Since his primary wave clear and damage come from spamming Justice Blades and his Great Sword skills during Bravest Fighter, healing off physical ability damage ensures he remains healthy during long skirmishes. With this item complete, Lapu-Lapu no longer needs to recall frequently, allowing him to aggressively trade in lane and contest early Turtle fights.

War Axe

Core

War Axe synergizes perfectly with Lapu-Lapu's multi-hit ability sequence. The Fighting Spirit passive steadily grants additional physical attack and spell vamp as he deals damage, reaching maximum power right as he enters Great Sword stance with Bravest Fighter. At full stacks, the extra true damage elevates his burst output against opposing frontliners, allowing him to overwhelm tanky EXP laners and backline targets alike during drawn-out teamfight engagements.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage grants 12 extra Physical Attack and 2% extra Spell Vamp per second for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Deal 10% extra True Damage according to Base Damage at full stacks.####[C8This effect is reduced to 50% for Marksmen, Mages, and Supports.]

When Lapu-Lapu dives deep into the enemy team, he inevitably absorbs focused damage. Queen's Wings activates Demonize when his health drops below threshold, granting crucial damage reduction and a massive boost to spell vamp. Combined with the bonus physical and magic defense from Bravest Fighter, this item prevents burst execution, letting him continue casting enhanced skills and generating Homeland Defender shields to clutch out fights even at low health.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Demonize: When HP drops below 40%, gains 20% Damage Reduction and 35% extra Spell Vamp for 5s (60s cooldown).

Blade of Despair drastically boosts Lapu-Lapu's physical offense late in the game. The Despair passive increases his physical attack when hitting low health non-minion enemies, turning his ultimate leap from Bravest Fighter into a lethal execution tool against squishy backline heroes. This immense damage output scales all his skill ratios, ensuring his enhanced Great Sword abilities wipe out weakened enemies before they can escape or respond.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Immortality provides a critical safety net during late-game teamfights around the Lord. The Immortal passive revives Lapu-Lapu shortly after taking lethal damage, giving him a temporary shield to reset his positioning. This resurrection gives him a second chance to cast Jungle Warrior, trigger his Homeland Defender shield, or unleash his transformed Great Sword abilities, ensuring he can finish off fights even if focused down first.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When facing high burst damage or fighting from behind

Prioritise completing Queen's Wings earlier right after Bloodlust Axe before building offensive options like War Axe or Blade of Despair. The extra damage reduction and spell vamp provided by Demonize keep Lapu-Lapu alive during initial dives, allowing his Homeland Defender passive to absorb incoming execution attempts.

When needing early physical dominance in the EXP lane

Rush War Axe immediately after Warrior Boots to maximize damage during early trades. Stacking Fighting Spirit while poking with Justice Blades forces enemy EXP laners out of lane, enabling Lapu-Lapu to dominate early objective fights for the Turtle alongside his team before building defensive sustain.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Lapu-Lapu's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
