How to itemise Balmond and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Balmond

Balmond excels as an aggressive EXP Lane juggernaut who thrives in extended skirmishes by repeatedly spinning with Cyclone Sweep and executing finishing targets using Lethal Counter. However, his frontline survival depends heavily on converting his physical damage into sustain and mitigating incoming focus fire. This build solves Balmond's inherent vulnerability to burst damage while amplifying his continuous physical output. By combining physical attack, spell vamp, and defensive durability, Balmond can comfortably sustain through minion waves and teamfights. Bloodthirst keeps him healthy after eliminations, while physical items scale his area damage, turning him into an unstoppable frontline bruiser capable of securing the Turtle and Lord with ultimate precision.

Build order

  1. 1 Warrior Boots
  2. 2 War Axe
  3. 3 Bloodlust Axe
  4. 4 Brute Force Breastplate
  5. 5 Queen's Wings
  6. 6 Cursed Helmet

Item by item

Warrior Boots provides immediate physical defense during early laning trades in the EXP Lane. The Valor passive increases physical defense whenever Balmond takes physical damage, allowing him to trade aggressively using Cyclone Sweep without taking overwhelming damage from enemy physical fighters. This early armor ensures Balmond can comfortably engage with Soul Lock, stick to opponents while spinning, and sustain through minion waves with Bloodthirst without being forced out of lane early.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Valor: Gain 4 extra Physical Defense for 3s when taking Physical Damage, up to 20.

War Axe

Core

War Axe is the core offensive engine for Balmond. Its Fighting Spirit passive grants accumulating physical attack and extra spell vamp as Balmond deals damage over time, which synergizes perfectly with the multi-hit continuous spins of Cyclone Sweep. Reaching maximum stacks unlocks bonus true damage based on base damage, transforming Balmond from a mere tanky disruption fighter into a terrifying frontline threat capable of shredding enemy frontlines and setting up Lethal Counter.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage grants 12 extra Physical Attack and 2% extra Spell Vamp per second for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Deal 10% extra True Damage according to Base Damage at full stacks.####[C8This effect is reduced to 50% for Marksmen, Mages, and Supports.]

Bloodlust Axe

Core

Bloodlust Axe dramatically increases Balmond's sustain during teamfights and wave management. Because Cyclone Sweep strikes nearby enemies multiple times in a single channel, the added spell vamp converts that continuous area damage directly into rapid health regeneration. Combined with Bloodthirst, this item allows Balmond to survive heavy focus fire while spinning through clustered enemy heroes or objective contests around the Turtle and Lord, ensuring he stays healthy enough to cast Lethal Counter.

Brute Force Breastplate offers essential mobility, offensive power, and defensive utility. The Brute Force passive grants extra physical attack and movement speed every second after Balmond deals damage, complementing the movement speed bonus from Cyclone Sweep to help him stay glued to fleeing targets. At full stacks, the extra control duration reduction helps Balmond shrug off crowd control effects, keeping his channeled spins uninterrupted and allowing him to reposition for Lethal Counter.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Brute Force: Each second after dealing damage, gain 6 extra Physical Attack and Magic Power and 2% extra Movement Speed for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Gain 15% extra Control Duration Reduction at full stacks.

Queen's Wings acts as Balmond's ultimate clutch defensive item during high-stakes late-game engagements. The Demonize passive triggers when Balmond's health drops low, granting significant damage reduction and a massive burst of extra spell vamp. When combined with Cyclone Sweep, Balmond can sustain through critical low-health moments, surviving fatal burst damage long enough to land a game-changing Lethal Counter and trigger Bloodthirst to fully restore his health pool in teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Demonize: When HP drops below 40%, gains 20% Damage Reduction and 35% extra Spell Vamp for 5s (60s cooldown).

Cursed Helmet

Situational

Cursed Helmet boosts Balmond's maximum health pool while providing steady area-of-effect magic damage through its Burning Soul passive. This continuous magic damage damages surrounding enemies and increases significantly against creeps and minions, allowing Balmond to clear waves faster and secure objective control near the Lord and Turtle. The additional durability pairs well with his physical defense items, making him much harder to take down when initiating engagements with Soul Lock.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Burning Soul: Deals Magic Damage equal to 0.6% of the hero's Max HP per second to nearby enemies. This damage is increased by 140% to 350% against creeps and minions (scales with level).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against aggressive physical heroes in the early laning phase

Prioritize finishing Warrior Boots immediately before building offensive items like War Axe. The physical defense gained from taking physical damage allows Balmond to safely trade using Cyclone Sweep and recover health via Bloodthirst without being pushed out of the EXP Lane. Delaying offensive components until armor is secured ensures stable lane control.

When enemy burst damage prevents finishing channels

Rush Queen's Wings earlier after completing your core offensive items instead of waiting for late game. The damage reduction and emergency spell vamp granted at low health give Balmond the survival cushion needed to complete Cyclone Sweep channels and execute critical Lethal Counter strikes before being burst down in clustered teamfights.

When fast objective control and split pushing are required

Build Cursed Helmet sooner to maximize wave clear speed and jungle creep damage. The extra health increases overall frontline durability while the area damage helps Balmond clear minion waves rapidly, enabling quick rotations across the map to secure the Turtle or Lord alongside team allies after initiating engagements with Soul Lock.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Balmond's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
